About Runoshi

The Runoshi Way

Every Runoshi blade starts with carefully chosen steel, selected for its balance of hardness, flexibility, and edge retention. Our smiths shape and forge each sword through controlled heating, folding, and quenching to reveal a clean, powerful line. Blades are then hand-polished to bring out their true character, from hamon details to mirror-like finishes. Before any sword leaves our workshop, it passes strict inspections for alignment, balance, and overall build quality, so you receive a piece that feels as good as it looks.

Runoshi Katana FAQ

Q1:What is a katana and how is it different from other Japanese swords?

A1: A katana is the classic Japanese samurai sword with a curved, single-edged blade and a long two-handed handle, designed for fast, powerful cuts. It is longer than a wakizashi or tanto and was traditionally worn edge-up through the belt.

Q2: What’s the difference between a functional katana and a decorative sword?

A2: A functional katana uses proper high-carbon steel, heat treatment and full-tang construction so it can handle real cutting practice when used safely. Decorative swords are mainly for display and often lack the materials and structure needed for impact use.

Q3: What do 1045, 1060, 1095, T10 and folded steel mean?

A3: These are different blade steels and constructions that balance hardness, toughness and appearance in different ways. 1060 offers a good balance for practice, 1095 and T10 can take a harder, sharper edge, and folded or Damascus blades add visible patterns and traditional-style craftsmanship.

Q4: Can I really cut with a Runoshi katana, and is it safe for beginners?

A4: Some Runoshi models are sharp, functional blades suitable for controlled cutting on proper targets, while others are designed mainly for display—always check the product description. Beginners should start with appropriate training, enough space and safety precautions, and often benefit from a lighter or even unsharpened practice sword at first.

Q5: How do I care for my katana and prevent rust?

A5: High-carbon steel can rust if it meets moisture, fingerprints or humidity, so always wipe the blade clean and dry after handling and apply a thin layer of oil before storage. Keep the sword in a dry place, away from extreme temperature changes, and out of reach of children.

Q6: What's the difference between a katana, a wakizashi and a tanto?

A6. A katana, wakizashi, and tanto are all traditional Japanese swords, but they differ primarily in length. A katana is the longest, usually over 60cm, and was the samurai's primary weapon. The wakizashi is shorter, normally between 30 and 60cm, and was used as a secondary weapon. The tanto is the shortest, its blade is typically 15 to 30cm long, and was generally used for close combat.
